STATEMENT:
Walking along the
beaches of Cape Cod, the wind picks up and the waves start to grow
larger and larger as they crash on the rocks. Heavy clouds move in
and the sky and water darken to deep blue and grey. I paint to
capture that exciting energy- the air mixing with wind and water. I
work partially to perfect technique then destroy it to bring forth
the energy and my paintings to life. I use oil paint because of the
elasticity of the medium which allows me to rearrange forms like the
natural energy in storms. I love the reflection of light and shadows
cast from it. Sometimes the ocean leaves me gifts which I try to
incorporate into my work either by using the real piece of driftwood
or whatever or using the idea of it.
I have studied old
master techniques as well as theories and techniques of modern
master. Whether Abstract Expressionist, Impressionistic, or
Realistic my work changes but the energy is continuous. I have
combined the inspiration from Modern masters such as Picasso, Matisse and
Chagall and primitive art—tribal masks and sculptural forms to
develop my own expression in the “Primitive Reflection” series
with inspiration taken from American Indian, Pacific Island and Papa
New Guinea tribes. My work changes as I grow and find exciting
venues of expression, new materials to explore and techniques.
